Check out the first trailer and poster for ROCK OF AGES starring Tom Cruise!

The very first trailer for ROCK OF AGES has hit the internet and let me just say, if you are a fan of musicals and prefer things like spandex, hair bands and slap bracelets, then your movie has arrived.  Set in the 1980’s, the movie , which is an adaptation of the highly successful broadway muscial, follows a small town girl named Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough – FOOTLOOSE, DANCING WITH THE STARS) and a city boy named Drew Boley (Diego Boneta – PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, 90210) as they move to L.A. and try to follow their dreams, falling in love along the way.  The trailer, which you can see below, seems to be pure fun, not afraid to even play on the campy side (see Catherine Zeta-Jones).  The wigs, the music, it all seems to be so much fun for the actors and it comes across in their performances.

Through out it all, we are graced with glimpses of super, mega-star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise – MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL), head hair-band honcho, king of them all.  It all leads up to his reveal in the latter part of the trailer.  Let’s face it, Tom has had some image issues in the past few years and while many of his movies have not been too much of a stretch for him, he has been willing to try things, to put himself outside of his comfort zone, almost as if to say, “Hey, I’m still a fun guy, I don’t take myself THAT serious…”.  He successfully did this with 2008’s TROPIC THUNDER in which he played, over-weight, balding, G5 loving, movie-mogul Les Grossman. From the trailer, it appears that he is going to be letting the wall down again, and giving us a truly fun, unique character performance.  Only time will tell, though.

The rest of the cast seems like brilliant casting to me.  Whether it is Catherine Zeta-Jones, who’s no stranger to musicals as she played Velma Kelly in 2002’s CHICAGO, as the church-going, heavy metal hating Patricia Whitmore, or Alec Baldwin in rare form (read: not well groomed and in a suit) as scruffy, long haired bar-owner Dennis Dupree, the casting is just phenomenal.  Joining them are Malin Ackerman, Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand, Will Forte, Kevin Nash and Mary J. Blige.

So check out the trailer below and let us know what you think?  Are you excited to see a musical that uses only 80’s hairband music to tell their story with?  Consider my interest…..peaked.
