If you remember back in December of 2007, there was a small indie film (I AM LEGEND
) that starred a relative unknown actor (Will Smith) who was catapulted to stardom thanks to none other than Christopher Nolan. Of course, I jest, but ticket sales for I AM LEGEND
were definitely assisted by a brilliant move on the part by Warner Bros. Pictures. They didn’t just attach a trailer to their upcoming superhero sequel, THE DARK KNIGHT
, no, they attached the first 6 minutes of the film in glorious IMAX for the bat-hungry crowd to devour and Holy Box Office Batman, the movie became the highest grossing superhero flick….EVER.
Now as they say, don’t mess with a good thing, and it appears that they have followed this great sage advice as they are doing it again. Next month, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL
will hit IMAX theaters early on December 16, with a full release on December 21. In front of those IMAX release prints will be…6 minutes of footage from next summer’s THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. If director Brad Bird (THE INCREDIBLES) and stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg weren’t enough to get movie-goers in the seats then it is safe to say that director Christopher Nolan’s preview of Christian Bale’s Batman and his “I just gargled rocks” voice will be enough to boost initial ticket sales.
as also just learned that the prologue footage has been rated PG-13 for some violence in the scenes. This must be some violence for the clip to get a PG-13 rating. My hope is that this footage is of the rumored break out of villains and crazies from Arkham Asylum by none other than Bane (Tom Harding). I guess we will just have to be in our seats at our favorite IMAX Theater on December 16 to find out.
