The current issue of Entertainment Weekly gave us our first look at some juicy new pics from CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, and now Paramount Pictures has unleashed some high-resolution versions of those pics for us to drool over.  You can check ’em all out below.  In the EW issue, there’s a great article about the film, which talks about several details and story elements, and even goes into some of the behind-the-scenes specifics on the production.  We’ve already covered many different news bits on the movie, but just to recap on what is known so far, here’s a preliminary rundown:

The film’s story takes place for the most part in World War II, and is an origin story.

Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) is the main villain, Arnim Zola (Toby Jones) is a secondary villain.

Captain America’s sidekick Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and his love interest Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) are secondary characters.

“The Howling Commandos” will be an international team of soldiers that Cap works with.

The Red Skull is using a cosmic cube to gain power.

A terrorist organization called Hydra has a part in the story.

The title “THE FIRST AVENGER” is a direct lead-in to the inevitable Joss Whedon film THE AVENGERS, and comic fans know that in Marvel cannon Cap is the leader of the AVENGERS team, which will consist of Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye and The Incredible Hulk.  It’s also common knowledge that Cap is found frozen in ice in the Antarctic several years after being presumed dead.  He ends up in that ice after trying to stop a Nazi rocket missile.  Many have wondered if the film version would play out in similar fashion, and how much of those story aspects would be seen in Cap’s film, or would be saved for THE AVENGERS movie.  The Entertainment Weekly article has now revealed many answers to those questions, with the following details:

The movie opens and closes with Cap being frozen in ice, with the WWII origin story in between.

Cap’s classic costume appears in the film (including the wings) as part of a funny scene in which Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is used as a propaganda tool at a USO show.

Rogers hates this and goes to see Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper plays Tony Stark’s dad) to have a more official battlesuit made.

Red Skull is Hitler’s head of advanced weaponry and hunts a cosmic cube hoping t0 harness its mystical powers for evil. The cube will be known as “The Tesseract.”

To help the movie play better overseas, it might simply be called THE FIRST AVENGER.

I honestly can’t wait to see what they do with this.  Director Joe Johnston has always been very solid in my book, and his adaptation of THE ROCKETEER is still one of my favorite comic book movies.  I also like Chris Evans, and think he’ll bring the right amount of charm and gravitas to this role.  The real question, beyond the Cap movie, is how this character will mesh with the other Marvel heroes in a big “team” movie.  I guess only time will tell.  With this, THOR, and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, Marvel is gonna own 2011.  Are you excited about the CAPTAIN AMERICA film?  Tell us your thoughts, and your reaction to these new images, in the comments below.
