TRANSFORMERS will get sequels, but not a reboot

Michael Bay’s wildly successful third installment of his TRANSFORMERS trilogy is in full swing, passing the half billion dollar mark in theaters today. Michael Bay, and star Shia LeBeouf, have both publically stated that this installment not only wrapped up the trilogy for the mighty robots-in-disguise, but also wrapped up their involvement in the franchise. That left many wondering what the fate of the Cybertronians would be. Would this be the next in a long line of rebooted franchises? Would the series continue on with recasting and a new director? Well, today, we get some of the answers we are looking for.

Don Murphy, producer on all three of the TRANSFORMERS films, has made a post on the message boards section of his personal website in regards to the fate of the franchise as it moves forward (not to mention lashes out at “haters” but I’ll let you go read that part yourself as it does not contain family-friendly vernacular):

What happens next? Certainly not a reboot. We haven’t lost the Transformers. They didn’t grow up or become expensive like Toby Maguire. I don’t know what happens next. I’m pretty sure there will be a second trilogy. I am pretty sure it will kick ass. And I am pretty sure some of you will hate it because it wasn’t all bots.

So while that does tell us that the next movie will be part a continuation rather than a reboot, it still leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Who will move in to direct the next trilogy? Steven Spielberg is a good choice considering he has spent three movies with the Autobots and Decepticons, but time will tell whether or not he would want to take that job. Who will take over as the new human lead? Who will the Autobots face in this go around considering (SPOILER) that all the major Decepticons are now dead? (END SPOILER) My vote is for Unicron. You already have the perfect set up. Just say that the use of the space bridge technology alerted Unicron to Earth’s presence and he moves his way in for lunch.

What are your thoughts? Are you excited for the next installment in this TRANSFORMERS universe or would you have rather them just reboot the whole thing? Who would you like see take the reins? Most importantly, who would you like see the Autobots tangle with in this next incarnation? Let us know below!
