SXSW 2011: Writer/director James Gunn talks SUPER with Mark Walters

James Gunn is one of those names in Hollywood you should definitely take note of. His origins go back to the Troma days, where he wrote and directed TROMEO AND JULIET, but he’s moved on to independent comedies like THE SPECIALS (a great send-up of superhero movies) and the bigger-budgeted SLITHER (turning the horror movie genre on its head). James has also written the SCOOBY-DOO live-action movies, and the 2004 DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, which helped kick off Zack Snyder’s directing career. Gunn’s latest cinematic effort is a personal script he’s been working on for the better part of a decade called SUPER. The film stars Rainn Wilson (THE OFFICE), Ellen Page (INCEPTION), Liv Tyler (THE STRANGERS), Nathan Fillion (CASTLE) and Kevin Bacon (DEATH SENTENCE). A sometimes shockingly dark tale, this movie goes places many might not think they’d see in a superhero story, and will undoubtedly be polarizing amongst critics and audiences. But you have to admire James for his dedication and unique vision, both of which help him assemble impressive casts time and time again. This interview was one of my most-anticipated of this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, mainly because I’ve really enjoyed his work through the years. Another reason SXSW 2011 is already in my record book as one of the best film fest experiences I’ve had to date. Check out the video below, and look for SUPER in theaters soon.

Big thanks to Ric Mulligan for the camerawork.  He’s pretty super himself.

SUPER opens April 1, 2011
