Nathan Fillion wants to be “Nathan Drake” in David O. Russell’s UNCHARTED movie

Director David O. Russell (THREE KINGS, THE FIGHTER) has been tapped to helm the big screen adaptation of UNCHARTED (directing and writing the screenplay), the popular Indiana Jones-like video game.  But who will play the hero of the story, Nathan Drake? If you’ve ever played the game (two have been released so far), you may have already noticed that the lead character looks rather similar to FIREFLY and CASTLE hero Nathan Fillion, who has so much fanboy street cred it’s insane. When my buddy Adam Hughes first showed me UNCHARTED, I immediately said “That guy looks like Nathan Fillion.” Well it appears as if the man himself isn’t at all opposed to the idea of taking on the role of Nathan Drake. One day after the announcement of Russell directing, on October 9, none other than @NathanFillion tweeted the following:

If ever there was a Twitter campaign, let this be it. Rise, ye Browncoats. Rise, ye Castillions. RISE!

Nathan Drake in the game

“Browncoats” is of course a reference to the hardcore fans of Joss Whedon’s FIREFLY and SERENITY, and “Castillions” is referring to fans of the series CASTLE.  Since then the Twitter account The_Browncoats has been actively pushing for various website to encourage the idea of Fillion playing Nathan Drake on the big screen… an idea we’re very comfortable with, and supportive of.  Nathan is no stranger to the world of video games, being an avid gamer himself, and also at one point providing voices for both HALO 3 and HALO: REACH.  Certain fans are also suggesting Joe Flanagan play Nathan Drake, and if you’ve ever seen his work on STARGATE: ATLANTIS, you probably know he’s pretty close to the look of Drake as well.

Now in the grand scheme of Hollywood and movie studios, what does this all mean?  Absolutely nothing.  Casting for UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE could go in just about any direction, and we wouldn’t put it above the studio to go after the biggest name they could get.  But choosing someone along the line of Nathan Fillion could prove very smart.  CASTLE is doing well for ABC, and the FIREFLY fandom is still incredibly strong.  The guy has plenty of fans out there, and for once it would be nice to see the obvious choice for a role actually get that role.  How do you feel about the idea of Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake?  Let us know in the comments below!

And just for fun (in case you’ve never seen it), here’s a short video of Nolan North, the man behind the voice and motion-capture work in the UNCHARTED games.
