If you liked the quirky humor and psychedelic look of THOR: RAGNAROK, you can attribute a whole lot of that to director Taika Waititi, who found a way to make the Asgardian storyline considerably more fun. Some wondered if Waititi would return for another Marvel Studios project, possibly even another THOR movie. Recent news mentioned Taika getting ready to work on a live action AKIRA movie for Warner Bros., which seemed like a perfect next project for him, but that was reportedly shelved. Then word had it Taika wanted to take on an animated FLASH GORDON movie, but that’s now on hold as well. Now it appears both of those projects may get put on hold until he can do another THOR film. Deadline is reporting Waititi is expected to reteam with star Chris Hemsworth for THOR 4 (we imagine a better title is coming) before pursuing his other proposed projects. The bigger question is which film will come first, this or James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol. 3, as Thor was on Quill’s ship at the end of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, and word has it Gunn knew of this ending when writing his screenplay for the next GUARDIANS. With Gunn busy working on SUICIDE SQUAD 2 before his next Marvel movie, one can only wonder if a new THOR movie would interfere with the timeline of things a bit. It’s possible THOR 4 could open with The God of Thunder getting dropped off somewhere by Quill, but that would effectively take him off the ship for adventures with them, and kind of kills the whole “Asgardians of the Galaxy” idea. Time will tell, but with Taika sitting on two other major projects, chances are he’s not going to wait long to get THOR 4 going.
Waititi previously helmed WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS and HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE, and was an inspired choice for the third THOR movie, especially after the rather lackluster THOR: THE DARK WORLD, which many to this day consider one of the most disappointing (overall) of the Marvel films. THOR: RAGNAROK revitalized the character and concepts within, and added a strong comedic flare to the proceedings, becoming an audience favorite and box office hit. Waititi also voiced Korg, the amusing rock creature who helped Thor in that film, and re-appeared briefly in ENDGAME. Taika will soon be seen in JOJO RABBIT this October, alongside Scarlett Johansson, in which he plays an imagined Adolf Hitler to a young boy during Nazi rule. Are you excited to see Waititi back in the director chair for another THOR movie? Tell us in the comments.
