Megan Fox could be RED SONJA… Rose McGowan is officially out

I remember a few years ago seeing RED SONJA promotional posters, featuring Rose McGowan, and saying “Robert Rodriguez presents” along the top.  It was shortly after GRINDHOUSE wrapped, McGowan and Rodriguez were an item, and it looked like this was going to be their next project together for sure.  Then GRINDHOUSE kind of… flopped.  Then it seemed like RED SONJA got quickly delayed.  Then they broke up… I think.  Who knows these days.  Despite all of that, since then there’s been rumors that the project was still going to happen, and Rodriguez would at least be involved in some sort of producing capacity.  Heck, these days with internet rumors, it’s hard to keep it all straight.  Well, now it appears that McGowan is officially no longer up for the role.  You may or may not have heard that she was cast in the CONAN THE BARBARIAN remake, which would make her playing Red Sonja in any sort of spin-off movie unlikely.  Rodriguez told MTV at the South by Southwest Film Festival that the project actually belonged to another company with finance problems, and said company is now waiting to see what happens with the CONAN film.  Pajiba is reporting that the previous incarnation of the remake has been completely scrapped, and that aside from McGowan’s departure, director Douglas Aarniokoski is also out.  Supposedly, Millennium Films is searching for another writer to come up with a variation of David N. White’s script.  But they note the project is far from dead.

Now the big news.  With McGowan out, rumor has it an offer has been made to none other than Megan Fox.  There is no word on her thoughts just yet, but she is closer in age and appearance to the Red Sonja in the proposed story, which deals with the origin of Sonja as a teenage woman who must become a warrior.  This could potentially be huge for Fox, who aside from her TRANSFORMERS movies hasn’t had tremendous box office success.

I’m starting to give up on Hollywood ever casting someone truly appropriate for a role, and accepting the expected casting of a hot name.  I mean come on, why is Channing Tatum getting work?  It’s certainly not his acting ability, or lack thereof.  It’s because he’s a product of Hollywood, and a flavor-of-the-month stars that girls want to go see on the big screen.  The same could be said of someone like Megan Fox, who obviously has tremendous sex appeal, despite not having much of an acting background.  I will say this, after seeing JENNIFER’S BODY, I do think Megan Fox has some strong acting potential waiting to manifest itself.  Could this be the film to bring it out?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
