Occasionally we get some juicy info from some of our reliable sources, and today we’ve got something potentially pretty cool. This is eyewitness stuff, folks, from a very trusted source. It seems that none other than Terry Gilliam (THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS) recently paid a visit to The Plains (little town in Virginia), where the great Robert Duvall lives. That’s right, Academy Award-winner Robert Duvall. Now why would the ex-Monty Python/genius director be seen in a modest rural town such as this? Apparently he was meeting with Duvall to discuss the long-delayed THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE movie with the seasoned actor. Some of you may recall Johnny Depp’s name being thrown around in conjunction with a DON QUIXOTE movie recently, but the project has seen a series of delays through the years for one reason or another. Gilliam’s first attempt to get this thing going was 10 years ago! The last time Depp was interviewed, he stated things didn’t look likely for him to be involved at this point, mainly because he had so much on his plate, and he wouldn’t want to put Terry in the position of having to wait. In December of 2009, Duvall had gone on record as being Gilliam’s new choice for Quixote, and Gilliam confirmed it a few days later. But since then there’s been little info or movement from what we could see. So why would Terry Gilliam come all the way over here to the small town of The Plains to meet one-on-one with Duvall? They were meeting to talk about DON QUIXOTE, and get the ball rolling… finally. Now there’s always the chance that nothing will come out of this, but don’t you think that Gilliam’s meeting with Duvall in person outside of a studio boardroom… doesn’t that count for something? We think so. It’s a sign things are getting serious. Could this be a meeting that moves things into a starting position? Very possible. Either way, it’s a good sign that this project may FINALLY be gaining some serious momentum. This should be an interesting film, especially since Duvall is pushing 80, and Quixote was 30 years younger in the book by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (which is what Gilliam’s screenplay is based on). We’ll keep you posted as more develops.
Actually, Depp was never intended to play Quixote but another part, “toby grosini”, a modern man thrown in Don Quixote’s time and mistaken for Sancho Panza.
Apparently, Gilliam found another actor to replace Depp and play this part, too.
Never said he was supposed to play Don Quixote, just that his name was thrown around in conjunction with the project. Gilliam always intended an older actor for Quixote, but was hoping Depp could be involved in some regard.
Now the scoop would be knowing who Gilliam chose to replace Depp…
Sam Elliot would make an awesome Don Quixote. Just sayin.
