Judgement is here. DREDD gets its first trailer.

Two weeks ago, we brought you the first teaser poster for the Karl Urban starring remake of Judge Dredd, simply titled DREDD.  Now we have the first full look of him in action and punishing the criminals of Mega City One.

With the movie coming out in just three months, Lionsgate has surely taken their time to start the marketing blitz, but with two more strong comic-book based movies still to hit prior to its release in September, it does kind of make sense.  DREDD was made for a rather small budget (a mere $45 million according to IMDb which is small these days) and you don’t want to start the marketing train too soon in a summer of huget blockbusters for fear that it will get drowned out and lost amoungst the rest, however, starting it now, in the middle of the summer, means that you can attach your trailers to some big blockbusters coming up (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) and still stay fresh in the eyes of the casual movie going audience.  With any luck, this will pay off for the studio because I have to say, even in a year with such comic heavy hitters, I have been waiting for this one.  Judgement is coming indeed and based off of the trailer, judgement should be pretty.

Take a look at the trailer and let us know what you think?  Do you still have enough in your comic book movie tank left for this one?

DREDD is directed by Pete Travis and stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey.

SYNOPSIS: The future America is an irradiated waste land.  On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One – a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets.  The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner.  Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routing day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation.  A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture – a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan.  When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire.  With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and director Pete Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film.  Filmed in 3D with stunning slow motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

DREDD is set to hit 2D and 3D theaters on September 21, 2012.
