James Cameron’s AVATAR now highest grossing film EVAH! Plus sequel rumors.

I’m not sure anyone is truly surprised by this, but James Cameron’s AVATAR is now officially the highest grossing film of all time.  20th Century Fox announced that the film’s worldwide gross (not including Puerto Rico) overcame the previous record held by James Cameron’s TITANIC.  The previous record was $1.242 billion, and AVATAR (as of Monday) has generated $1.292 billion, which is $50.1 million more.  Over the weekend, the domestic take for AVATAR was $551.7 million, which is $49 million below TITANIC‘s record of $600.8 million in domestic sales.  Source – THR

Rumors are already circulating that James Cameron is gearing up for an AVATAR sequel, with SlashFilm reporting that a reliable source is saying technical crew members are in the process of being contracted for up to the next 5 years, in case the shoot runs long.  With the Golden Globes award-sweeping, and the ridiculous amount of money this has made so far, it’s safe to say 20th Century Fox is more than eager to get a sequel moving.  I recently spoke to one of my contacts at Fox about AVATAR‘s success, and they said (not surprisingly) that the studio is over the moon.  No one expected this kind of result, but now the question is what can possibly follow it up.  We’ll probably know sooner than later.
