Director James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is Marvel’s big summer box office film for 2014, and one of the more curious projects to come from the popular comic book company. Unlike the more traditional superheroes, these cosmic characters have strange appearances and odd settings, and many have wondered what the visuals would look like. We’ve had a few “official” looks and some conceptual art for the film, but now Marvel has released an official teaser trailer, which you can see below… and man oh man does it look crazy cool. The movie stars Chris Pratt (as Peter Quill / Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (as Gamora), Bradley Cooper (as the voice of Rocket Raccoon), Dave Bautista (as Drax the Destroyer), Vin Diesel (as the voice of Groot), Benicio Del Toro (The Collector), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Lee Pace (Ronan the Accuser), Djimon Hounsou (Korath the Pursuer), Michael Rooker (Yondu), John C. Reilly (Rhomann Dey) and Glenn Close (Nova Prime). Tell us in the comments if you also think this looks insanely awesome.

And since we just had DOCTOR WHO star Karen Gillan at Dallas Comic Con‘s SCI-FI EXPO, here’s a look at her as Nebula… which also explains why she shaved her head for role:

[The Guardians'] stories converge in the space prison Kyln. After the characters break out, they venture to Knowhere (the severed head of a celestial being that serves as a hangout for aliens) and visit the weird menagerie of the Collector (Benicio Del Toro). They also have to avoid two villains, Ronan (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), who are in hot pursuit of Quill’s orb, which has the power to destroy the galaxy.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team — the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the blanace. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

And if you missed it, here’s our epic question and answers from almost the entire cast at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, talking about their respective characters:
