Marvel may be close to choosing who will direct and write the DOCTOR STRANGE movie

With this week’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY trailer release working the fan base into a tissy this week, and ANT-MAN in production, Kevin Feige and company are now focusing on what may be the riskiest property yet in Stage Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: DOCTOR STRANGE.

Before fans can even look at who will play the Sorcerer Supreme, the director and writer needs to be locked in – and the Hollywood Reporter thinks they know who’s on the short list.

StrangeTalesIn an exclusive post to their Heat Vision blog, THR says four directors are in final meetings to determine who will shepherd the film through development: BRAVE co-director Mark Andrews, A ROYAL AFFAIR‘s Nikolaj Arcel, WELCOME TO YESTERDAY‘s Dean Israelite, and WARM BODIES‘ Jonathan Levine.

Additionally, the writing team from KUNG FU PANDA, Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger, are said to be close to a deal to write the script.

Doctor Strange, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1963, is a sorcerer charged with protecting of Earth against magical and mystical threats. That magical element may be a tougher thing to sell in the current climate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a more “real world” approach to selling superheroes.

Now, let’s hope the chatter of Johnny Depp circling the role of the good Doctor is nothing more than fanboi gossip…
