Will Forte is definitely one of my favorite comedians to come out of Saturday Night Live in recent years. Some of his skits have been among the funniest and most memorable SNL had to offer in the last decade. It’s no surprise that Forte started as a writer, even spending a year writing for David Letterman and The Late Show. He’s also written and starred in movies like THE BROTHERS SOLOMON and MACGRUBER, neither of which were box office hits, but the latter of which has developed quite a cult following after the fact. Now Will is trying his hand at drama with movies like RUN AND JUMP, LIFE OF CRIME and NEBRASKA. Directed by Alexander Payne (THE DESCENDANTS, SIDEWAYS), NEBRASKA follows a elderly father (played by Bruce Dern) and son (played by Forte) who go on an unexpected road trip together. While there are funny moments in the film, Will is definitely playing it straight here, and his performance is a far cry from his SNL days. It’s also refreshingly solid and effective, showing the range Forte has for this sort of material. They always say comedians can make the best actors, and this is no exception. I had a chance to sit down with Will and chat about the movie recently when he stopped through Dallas. You can see that interview below, and be sure to check out NEBRASKA when it hits your town. Like many Alexander Payne films, it’s at times amusing, and almost always in some way very relatable.
