It seems like Warner Bros. is getting pretty serious lately in attempts to adapt DC Comics properties for both the big and small screen. Christopher Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT movies coming to an end led into MAN OF STEEL, which has been highly successful, and ARROW seems to be doing okay for the CW network. They’ve even announced a FLASH series on its way. With the announcement of Ben Affleck as the Batman, more eyes are being focused on what DC announcement will be made next. Deadline is reporting the Fox will be producing a new series for Warner Bros. TV and Bruno Heller (who created THE MENTALIST) taking place in Gotham City, which as we all know is Batman’s realm. The show will follow origin stories for Commissioner James Gordon and “the villains who made Gotham City famous.” It should be noted that the character of Gordon is as old a creation as Bruce Wayne and Batman (created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane), since he first appeared in Detective Comics #27, the very first Bat-comic book. In GOTHAM (the assumed title), he would still be a police detective with G.C.P.D. and would not yet have met Batman (guess we could assume that would happen in the final episode, should this prove a success). Batman is not expected to appear in the series. Gary Oldman did a fine job playing Gordon in the Nolan trilogy, and the character has been in various DC Comics through the year on his own adventures, plus there was a long-running series called Gotham Central (by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark) which focused on the city’s police force. The idea of using the G.C.P.D. in a series is intriguing, especially if it’s done like CSI or other procedural cop shows. This is also an idea the WBTV has apparently been tossing around for a year now. The last series based on Batman’s world was the moderately popular BIRDS OF PREY, which focused on Barbara Gordon and Huntress.
