Matthew McConaughey has been turning in some pretty amazing roles lately with films like KILLER JOE, BERNIE, MUD and what looks to be a memorable performance in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. But let’s not overlook DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, which may just be big time Oscar bait. You may have seen some photos recently of McConaughey looking insanely thin and unhealthy, and this is the movie he took off that weight for. He’s playing Ron Woodroof, a real-life Texas electrician who battled pharmaceutical companies in 1985. It’s directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and Jennifer Garner co-stars, but also look for Jared Leto in an amazing transformation (you may not recognize him at first in the trailer). Take a look at the first poster above and first trailer below, and tell us your thoughts in the comments.
In this fact-based drama, Matthew McConaughey portrays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1985, Ron was blindsided with an HIV diagnosis and given 30 days to live. With medications still restricted in the US and the country still divided over how to combat the virus, Ron procured non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world through both legal and illegal means. To avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, Ron established a “buyers club” for fellow HIV-positive people, giving them access to his supplies.
