Video interview: Lake Bell talks about writing, directing and starring in IN A WORLD…

If you’re not familiar with the work of actress Lake Bell, you may also not have heard about her film opening this weekend called IN A WORLD… – the comedy about an ambitious woman trying to make it in the competitive voiceover industry was a big hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, nominated for a Dramatic Grand Jury Prize (for Lake) and winning the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Bell has proven herself in both dramatic and comedic roles, and has even made a few short films before now (not to mention being behind the camera on a few episode of her series Children’s Hospital), but this is her first feature effort as director. I had the honor and pleasure of hosting Lake’s Q&A during her Dallas press stop to promote the movie, but we met earlier in the day for the first time, and have a great chat for almost 20 minutes – you can see that video below. As for the film, coming from someone who knows about the voiceover industry, I can tell you there’s a lot of truth represented here. Bell does a great job of balancing comedic moments with dramatic storytelling, and even mixes some romance in. I’m happy to say the end result is a fun character study and pulls back the curtain a bit on an industry a lot of folks know very little about. Check out the interview now and go see the movie this weekend, you’ll be glad you did. Big thanks to Carole Smith for setting this up, and to the intrepid Ric Mulligan for shooting it.
