We showed you the first teaser trailer for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS on April 1, and now we’ve got the full trailer, which looks pretty impressive… or at least more impressive than the teaser. While I thought 2010’s PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF (based on Rick Riordan’s books) was an okay attempt at a new HARRY POTTER-esque franchise, I seemed to think it didn’t do very well at the box office. On a budget os $95 million, it only grossed $88.7 million in the U.S., though brought in a worldwide gross of $226.5 million. Apparently Fox was happy enough with it to produce a sequel, three years later, but a sequel nonetheless. Most of the original cast is back, including star Logan Lerman, and co-stars Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, and Jake Abel. We lose Chris Columbus as director, along with Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, and some of the other notables from the first film… but we’re gaining Nathan Fillion, Stanley Tucci, Missi Pyle and Anthony Head. After seeing the newest trailer (below) I’m getting a little more excited now, and as I said before it looks like a fun family film at the least. When talking to Jake Abel during his recent press stop in Dallas for THE HOST, I asked him about it, and he seemed enthusiastic, so we’ll see. Directing chores this time are going to Thor Freudenthal (DIARY OF A WIMPY KID). Take a look at the teaser trailer below and tell us your thoughts in the comments. The full cast includes Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Jake Abel, Douglas Smith, Mary Birdsong, Yvette Nicole Brown, Missi Pyle, Anthony Head, Paloma Kwiatkowski, Leven Rambin, Robert Maillet and Zoe Aggeliki. Based on the best-selling book, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS continues the young demigod’s epic journey to fulfill his destiny. To save their world, Percy and his friends must find the fabled and magical Golden Fleece. Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil.
Okay. I’m admittedly excited about this movie, but not only for the fact that Nathan Fillion is in it. I am actually wanting redemption for the legion of fans that this book series currently has. Riordan is a fantastic writer who created characters who fans love and care for deeply- so deeply a parallel series has been written for both Egyptian mythology and the Roman mythos is currently awaiting the publishing of the 3rd book. The reason that the movie fell short the first time in the box office is it lacked the repeat ticket sales of those fans. The original movie was such a departure from the original book that fans rebelled. My own students at the time wrote 101 reasons why the first movie was horrible. They wrote letters of condolence to Riordan because at that time it looked as if a sequel would never be possible. So excited, yes, but cautiously so. If I had never read the books my kids would be first in line to see this, but after being burned I’ll still go opening weekend, but I hope they understand that my love of the books can only tolerate so much when it comes to rewrites.
