While at first glance the comedy WE’RE THE MILLERS may look like a throw away formulaic flick that could be quickly forgotten, there’s something very nostalgic about the concepts in it, almost like a throwback to 1980’s satire movies like DR. DETROIT or TRADING PLACES. The concept is of course silly, having Jason Sudeikis form together a fake suburban family as a way to pass safely through Mexico to complete a major drug deal. IMDB notes Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Steve Buscemi were all considered for the lead at various stages of development before SNL’s Sudeikis was cast… which is amusing, as I could see just about any of them in that role and accept the idea. What’s most surprising is seeing Jennifer Aniston, at the age of 44, playing a seedy stripper – but let’s face it, after seeing her in the trailer, she’s definitely got a convincing body for the role. Mix in Ed Helms as a slimy drug boss, Emma Roberts as a put out runaway, and Will Poulter as the nerdy kid thrown in this unlikely mix, and the cast is definitely one worth watching. After seeing the trailer, you could practically predict the dialogue that will be spoken in the inevitable scenes that play out. But before passing too much judgement, note this baby is directed by Marshall Rawson Thurber, who helmed the rather wonderful DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY (2004).
