If there’s one element that can make or break a film, outside of its overall quality, it has got to be the trailer. A trailer (read: most times created by a company not associated with the studio producing it) can make the very worst film look like a billion dollars and conversely undersell something that is a genuinely good product. Case in point. The marketing for DreamWorks’ upcoming film The Croods hasn’t been, shall we say, doing the film any favors but this is a tough one to market. It’s not John Carter hard but still, if you asked anyone on the street if they wanted to see a film called The Croods, they’d first have to know what you were talking about and second may say no.
So how can the studio help a product succeed? By giving it all away up front? Not quite, but by teasing and tantalizing us with bright spots here and there they can let us know there’s a diamond in the rough and in this case it’s called The Croods. Again, the trailers aren’t doing it any favors. Now that said, we at Bigfanboy try to get behind a film we believe in, even if it is a major studio production. We got to see said pre-historic family comedy a few weeks ago and while I can’t say much other than “yes, I saw it”, I will quietly add that people are going to be surprised at how much fun this is and it’s in keeping with other great DreamWorks films, on par with How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda.
So recently, as far as the teasing and tantalizing bit I mentioned above, some concept artwork has been released from the upcoming book The Art of the Croods. /Film recently posted exclusive photos which included some of the gorgeous photos from the hardcover book that has over 400 pieces of concept art written by Noela Hueso. It’s an eye-full for sure and some major eye candy to boot. Too bad it comes out after the film (March 26th for those interested), otherwise it’d be a nice companion piece to know more about the production before going in to see it. But hey, no one in Hollywood asks us what we think, do they? So as I’ve detained you long enough, here are some simply marvelous concept photos for the upcoming DreamWorks delightful film The Croods.
DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods is a pre-hysteric family comedy directed by talented animators Chris Sanders and Kirk De Micco. It stars Nic Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Clark Duke, Catherine Keener, and Cloris Leachman and will be release this month on March 22nd, 2013. Get excited because it’s gonna be good, trust us!
