In 2010 movie theater audiences got a rather gritty take on the superhero genre with Matthew Vaughn’s KICK-ASS, which featured Aaron Taylor-Johnson as an unlikely costumed vigilante, Chloë Grace Moretz as a foul-mouthed younger and deadlier protege, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as a supervillain wannabe. The end result was a fun and relatively faithful adaptation of the Marvel comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., which itself was pretty rough stuff. Since then many have wondered if we’d ever get a sequel, and now it’s just about here. Jeff Wadlow (CRY WOLF) has taken over writing and directing chores, but just about all of the original cast is back, plus Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes. Other new additions to the cast include John Leguizamo, Donald Faison, and Morris Chestnut. Check out the red band trailer below, which premiered on MTV.com, and definitely does not hold back. A few things we’ve noticed right off the bat – Johnson is a lot more pumped up physically, Moretz is growing up fast, and Jim Carrey is definitely doing a weird low-register voice thing, which could really help make his character truly great. If you haven’t read the comics, the KICK-ASS 2 comic book storyline was absolutely crazy, and incredibly graphic and gory. It will be interesting to see how closely the movie sequel follows it. Take a look at the new poster (above) and red band trailer below, and tell us your thoughts in the comments.
After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.
Yes this movie looks awesome.
