The always engaging South by Southwest Film Festival starts this Friday, and this looks to be another great year for wierd, wonderful, and wacky movies. This week we’ll be featuring some of the things going on you might want to take note of, all leading up to our annual mid-festival coverage. You can also check out our Twitter account for what’s going on around us while we’re there… we’ll tell you if you’re missing anything epic. Today’s feature is about director Sophie Huber’s new documentary HARRY DEAN STANTON: PARTLY FICTION, which is screening multiple days at SXSW 2013. Check out the full press synopsis below, followed by a trailer, and look for it in person starting on March 8 at 9:15pm at the Stateside Theatre (more showtimes listed below the trailer). Upon watching a trailer for a doc like this, one has only to wonder why this hasn’t already been done by now – a definitive look at an incredible actor like Harry Dean Stanton, who has turned in so many memorable roles for so many legendary directors. Even his bit parts are fantastic, and as an icon from the world of entertainment, there’s few more impressive than this man. This one is definitely on our must-see list for 2013.

Lensed in colour and b/w by Seamus McGarvey, the film explores Harry Dean Stanton’s enigmatic outlook on his life and his unexploited talents as a musician. “Putting the focus on the music rather than his person helped to engage him and capture a part of him that few people have seen. We wanted to create an atmosphere that is true to Harry, moving along with him, in his mind, at his pace, rather than to follow a linear or biographical order” (Sophie Huber, director). With excerpts from Alien, Paris Texas, The Straight Story, Missouri Breaks et al., and interviews with David Lynch, Wim Wenders, Sam Shepard, Kris Kristofferson and Debbie Harry.
