DOCTOR STRANGE and ANT-MAN Films Confirmed For Marvel’s ‘Phase Three’

With THE AVENGERS capping off what Marvel calls their “Cinematic Universe: Phase One,” we got an idea that their cinema slate had a master plan: four or five showcase movies, capped by an Avengers all-star affair. “Phase Two” is set, and in production, with IRON MAN 3 leading the charge this May.

Additionally, thanks to an MTV interview with Marvel Studios’ President of Production Kevin Feige, we know a few pieces of “Phase Three,” and they’re characters comic fans have been clamoring for – Ant-Man and Doctor Strange.

We’ve known for several years that Edgar Wright has been working to crack Ant-Man for the big screen. At the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, Wright professed his love of the character, and showed off some test footage to display how his changing size and abilities would work on the big screen. Feige says Wright’s been beating the Ant-Man drum for a while:

I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004. He asked me what Marvel was doing with ‘Ant-Man’ — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an ‘Ant-Man’ origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.

Feige says ANT-MAN will be the first “Phase Three” film released, tentatively slated for November 2015 (following THE AVENGERS 2 that May). Which leads us to the good Doctor:

[Doctor Strange is] a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is ANT-MAN, which keeps us excited.

There’s still no word on a director, scriptwriter, or actor for DOCTOR STRANGE, but knowing he’s on the MCU map is still pretty tantalizing.

What’s your take? Are you stoked, or scared to see these characters get the silver screen treatment? Who do you want to see the MCU line up next? Leave it in the comments section, True Believers!
