Back in October, we reported that Patty Jenkins was officially on board to direct THOR 2. Now that’s no longer the case. Deadline is saying the director is out citing “creative differences”, and that Marvel Studios is already seeking other options, with chances we’ll hear a new directorial name announced soon. Jenkins has officially been on board the project for two months, leaving many to wonder what sort of differences could have prompted the split. Kenneth Branagh’s THOR grossed $448 million worldwide, so there’s also speculation that bringing in a more “independent” director to take over the sequel may be a risky idea.
Patty’s only major motion picture before now was the 2003 critically-acclaimed MONSTER starring Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci. She has also done some television episodes for ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, ENTOURAGE as well as the pilot episode for THE KILLING. Her most recent work was directing the segment “Pearl” for the Lifetime movie FIVE that consists of five different short films that explore the effects of breast cancer in the lives of people. Deadline also added “Her exit had to do with creative differences, but the feeling is that she’ll probably end up working on one of these superhero films, but perhaps not on a sequel.” This would suggest she may have struck a deal with Marvel that keeps her in the running for a future film despite leaving this one.
